Religion classes
My topic is religion classes at BYU, and that they should be pass/fail. Religion classes at BYU can be a little difficult, especially depending on the teacher. You could get a religion teacher who makes the class really hard, you do poorly in the class, and then your GPA is hurt. Religion classes should be almost a break, where you can go to be fed, but not stress and pressure. No other university recognizes these religion credits, they just recognize the bad GPA that could have been caused by those classes. While you could do poorly in a religion class, you could also do really well and help you GPA, but this takes some serious work. It is also a great opportunity to strengthen your testimony, but at times that is hard when you are stressing over tests and assignments in the class. My proposal, that I believe would solve the issue at hand, is that we make religion classes at BYU pass/fail.
let me know what you think group!:)
I agree that the purpose of religion classes should be to spiritually "feed" the students, but I think that religion professors should also push students to dig deeper into the material rather than preaching to them and handing them a grade. I think that the stuying and effort put into the class is what helps you to be more fully edified by the class. The work however, should be managable and shouldn't cause a student that is really trying to learn to feel overwhelmed.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Michelle that religion classes should be challenging enough to push students to delve into the scriptures with a scholar's eye, but I think you could definitely make the case for pass/fail grades. Good to be aware of counterarguments!
ReplyDeleteThat's a good idea for a paper! I think a good point you could bring up and mention is that having the assignments and exams/finals kind of turns it into a regular class, like might make you resent the class instead of seeing it as a place of refuge from the world.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I wrote this comment, it was before I changed my username.
DeleteI completely agree with what everyone has stated. The religion class should be an enjoyable and uplifting part of the BYU experience.
